Bicycles in traffic

Protective helmet is the safety belt of biker!

Do not buy a helmet in a hurry! The helmet must have a suitable size. The most important is to observe that the protective helmet would not fall off your head during the accident. If the helmet has received a strong blow, replace it.
For pre-school children a helmet with safety lock on the strap would be recommended. This opens automatically with the influence of the weight of the child. The safety lock protects the child if he or she gets stuck somewhere with the helmet.
Be an example for your child and use the bike helmet!

Bicycle maintenance and equipment

Have experts regularly check your bike. Do not forget to have them check the order of the wheels and tyre pressure.
A bicycle has to have

  • a functioning brake and signal bell
  • a yellow reflector on both sides of at least one wheel
  • during dark times or low visibility a white light on the front and red light or a red reflector replacing the red light on the back

In addition to that, a children’s bike could have a rod with reflector fixed on the left side so that it would be easier to notice a child riding a bike.
During dark times use reflector or wear glowing clothes or reflector vest, this way you are visible in traffic.

Follow the traffic rules

At the beginning of the biking season, it is wise to repeat the rules and also to discuss them with children.

Bicycles cannot be used on

  • highways
  • public transport lanes
  • roads or waysides if a cycle track runs beside it
  • roads if the biker is younger than 10 years
  • sidewalks if the biker is older than 10 years

Take care of your bicycle

Each year more and more bicycles are stolen, therefore think of preventing theft now.

The bicycle lock is an efficient anti-theft protection. Always lock your bicycle if you leave it unattended. Lock your bicycle even if you keep it in a commonly used room such as a room used also by other members of an apartment association. When buying a bicycle, ask the salesperson first if the bicycle has a lock which is recognized by insurance companies. Do not forget to supply your bicycle with security markings.
