Rules at sea

Before you go to sea

  • Make sure that the vessel is in good condition when you go to sea.
  • Make sure that the ship always has all the necessary rescue equipment. Wear your life vest at sea as well as in dock.
  • Do not go onto the open sea if the boat you are in is not intended for such use.
  • Notify your familiars and friends of your destination and the plan of your trip, as well as of any changes in your plans.
  • Your obligation is to know all the seafaring rules.
  • Alcohol and seafaring do not match.
  • Do not overload the vessel.
  • Make sure that you always have a good overview of what is going on at sea. Be careful with your speed.
  • Always listen to the weather forecast. If the weather is supposed to be bad, it would be better to stay on shore.
  • If you are already at sea, proceed to the nearest port or protected location.
  • If your vessel is sinking, stay where you are. You are safer there than if you were to attempt to swim towards the shore.
  • Do not dispose of waste which is generated at sea, oil residues or the contents of the lavatory into the sea or on land. Take all your rubbish home with you or dispose of it responsibly when you reach port.
