How do you prevent water damage?
Usually the damage caused by water leaks are extensive and restoring that damage is expensive.
- Have the condition of all heating elements, the water supply network and domestic appliances checked regularly
- The pipes should be installed in a way that allows any possible water leak to be detected immediately
- Water and heating pipes that are under pressure should be installed in protective pipes
- Piping should not be more than thirty years old. The condition of older piping should be checked regularly
- Iron pipes which corrode are especially hazardous. There are no major problems with copper pipes
- Check the drainage in the bathroom
- In places with water always be sure that you use only wall covering materials that are intended for use in humid rooms
- Make sure that the joints between floor and wall covering materials are tights or cover each other in humid rooms, fully sealing in the room
- In humid rooms install a humidity block under the floor and wall tiles. When building use only trained, skilled workers
- Regularly check the hoses and connections for the washing machine and dish washer
- Try to avoid pipes passing the floor. The fewer cuts that are required, the better
- If possible, install the hot water boiler in the same room as the drainage trap
- Check the anodes on an enamelled hot water boiler at least once every six years
- Before the beginning of winter empty the water systems outdoors and also empty it in any non-heated rooms because it might freeze there. Water systems should be built in such a way that allows them to be easily emptied
- Keep objects in the cellar at a level that is higher than the floor surface
- Do not leave a washing machine running when you leave home
- A washing machine should be connected to the water supply network through a specific tap which is intended for it, and which can be closed off if the machine is not going to be used
- A washing machine should be installed in a room which has a floor trap
- A vessel should be placed under the washing machine and the fridge’s frost chamber to collect melt water or any water flow
