What should you do in the event of a vehicle loss (kasko)?

First steps after an accident

First, ensure free access to any injured persons. If necessary, put out any fires by commandeering the aid other passengers or by calling the Rescue Board.
Check the health of any people who have been involved in an accident. If there are injuries call the Rescue Board immediately. If possible and you if have the skills, provide first aid to any injured persons.

After any people who are involved have been taken care of, or if they have not been injured at all and no damages have been caused to third parties (no posts have been hit, or buildings, other vehicles or any other objects), you can begin to establish the circumstances of the loss event on your own and, if necessary, draw up your version of the events, using graphics where appropriate.

If necessary call the police

If a person has been injured in the accident or you cannot reach an agreement with any third parties to whom damages have been caused, you should notify the police of the loss event and thereafter follow the instructions issued by the police.

Take statements from the witnesses

Taking statements from any potential witnesses of the event is highly useful, especially if you can ascertain their contact details (most notably their name and telephone number) in order to assist in any investigations.

Carefully note the position of the vehicle

If any vehicle which has been involved in an accident is now an obstacle for traffic, its position on the ground should be marked out by any means at hand (using stones, paint, or chalk, for example), and the vehicle in question can then be removed to an extent that opens up the road to flowing traffic. Once this has been done, draw up your version of the events.

After establishing the events

After establishing the circumstances behind the loss event, the vehicle can be removed from the scene of the event (or it can be driven away).

  • You are not allowed to leave the scene of the event without the permission of the police in case where the following circumstances have ocurred:
a person has been killed or injured as a result of the accident
  • persons who were involved in the accident do not agree upon the distribution of liability
  • the notice of a traffic accident has not been completed and signed by all persons who were involved in the traffic accident.

The vehicle can be moved directly to a repair shop if at first sight it seems that it can be repaired.

Our cooperation partners will help you to formalise all the necessary documents.

You are allowed to leave the scene of an accident with your vehicle only after you have made sure that the vehicle is safe to drive and driving it will not cause any new damage it. In other cases please make use of a towing service in order to transport the vehicle.

Glass damage

If the only damage is to the glass in the passenger compartment, please contact our cooperation partners who are specialists in glass-related damages.

If necessary, call the police.
