We cannot protect ourselves against unexpected events while travelling or before a trip. However, travel interruption insurance can help you if your trip is cancelled or your travel plans change due to circumstances beyond your control. Learn more and get travel insurance in advance, already when booking your trip.

Add to your travel insurance for extra protection!

Travel plans are usually made in advance: flight tickets are purchased, accommodation and excursions or other activities are paid for before the trip starts. But unexpected circumstances may ruin your travel plans. With travel insurance including travel interruption coverage, part of the already incurred costs will be reimbursed if you have to cancel the trip, interrupt it, or if your travel plans change due to transportation delays.

When can travel interruption insurance help?

Trip is cancelled

You cannot go on the trip or you have to return within 24 hours after the trip has started, because:

  • You or your only travel companion suddenly fell ill or got injured
  • Your close relative developed a life-threatening condition, was seriously injured, or died
  • Your cat or dog became seriously ill or was injured and requires treatment, and your presence is essential
  • Your property in Estonia suddenly and unexpectedly suffered damage, and your presence is essential

Transport is delayed

You have unforeseen additional expenses to be able to continue your trip because the travel schedule has been interrupted for the following reasons:

  • The service provider has overbooked flight, ship, train, or other tickets
  • A flight, train, bus, or ship was delayed or cancelled due to a technical failure or weather conditions
  • Transport was delayed up to 24 hours because the schedule was changed after you bought the tickets
  • Departure was delayed due to a lockout or a strike at the public transport company
  • On the way to the airport or port, your vehicle suffered a technical failure, had a flat tire, or was involved in a traffic accident
  • The plane made an emergency landing
  • Luggage was delayed abroad due to the fault of the carrier

Trip is interrupted

You need to interrupt the trip and return home because:

  • Your travel companion developed a life-threatening condition, was seriously injured, or died during the trip
  • During your trip, your close relative at home developed a life-threatening condition, was seriously injured, or died
  • Your pet became seriously ill or was seriously injured at home during your trip, and your presence is essential
  • Your pet travelling with you became seriously ill or was seriously injured
  • During the trip, in the area where you were staying, a danger requiring evacuation developed – for example, an armed conflict broke out, a terrorist act occurred, a natural disaster happened, or an epidemic spread
  • During the trip, your property at home suddenly and unexpectedly suffered damage, and your presence is essential
  • Your travel documents were stolen or destroyed during the trip

In which cases does travel interruption insurance reimburse costs?

The terms and conditions of travel insurance describe which events and which expenses are reimbursed if you have travel interruption coverage. They also include exclusions that are not covered by travel interruption insurance. Below you will also find examples to better understand when reimbursement is granted and when it is not.

Important to know: travel interruption coverage takes effect 3 days after concluding the insurance, and for it to be valid at the start of the trip, the insurance must be taken out at least 3 days before the trip begins. It is even better if you conclude the insurance as soon as the tickets are purchased and bookings are made.

When to conclude travel insurance? And travel interruption insurance?

Once you have booked a trip or bought the first tickets, it is the right time to also conclude travel insurance – with travel interruption coverage. Why so? You may plan, but life follows its own course, and there can always be surprises that may ruin your plans.

Travel interruption coverage that is part of travel insurance is valid even before the trip begins, taking effect 3 days after concluding the insurance contract. For example, if the policy is issued on May 1, trip cancellation coverage is valid from May 4 at midnight (00:00). If a travel interruption event occurs even before the trip starts, some of the expenses already made will be reimbursed thanks to travel interruption coverage.

How to choose the sum insured for travel interruption insurance?

To choose the insurance amount, add up all already incurred transport and accommodation costs, as well as amounts spent on events and services (e.g., car rental, concert tickets). You should also take into account that if you have to return home unexpectedly earlier, ticket prices for transport may differ significantly from the original ones.

The maximum insurance amount for travel interruption at If is €5000. You can choose a suitable insurance sum in the travel insurance calculator when concluding the insurance.
