Why insure your motorcycle?

Sun on your face, wind in your hair, and that unbeatable sense of freedom – riders, do you also feel that constant urge to hit the road? Every motorcycle ride is a mix of adrenaline and pure joy. But no matter how thrilling or familiar the road may seem, we can never fully predict what is waiting around the next turn or how other drivers will behave.

Motorcycle insurance is a reliable companion that gives you peace of mind in unexpected situations – both on the road and beyond. In this article, we will explain why having both MTPL and casco insurance for your motorcycle is important.

Motorcycle ride - it is a mix of adrenaline and pure joy. With motorcycle insurance you can enjoy the ride knowing you have a helping hand in unexpected situations.

Is MTPL insurance mandatory for motorcycles? Yes!

You probably already know – to participate in road traffic, your motorcycle needs valid MTPL insurance. It is your responsibility to others on the road. Riding without it can lead to a fine – and that is not something you want to add to your journey, right?

Every road user has a responsibility toward others, and MTPL insurance helps uphold that responsibility. What does this mean? If you accidentally cause a traffic accident that injures someone else, like another motorcyclist, or damages their belongings, you are responsible for covering those costs. In these situations, MTPL insurance is very helpful because you will not have to pay for the damages out of your own pocket – MTPL insurance takes care of them for you.

It is common for many motorcyclists to get MTPL insurance only for the riding season, not realizing that it can also be useful during the winter months. Imagine this – you have parked your motorcycle in an underground garage for the winter. Then, something unexpected happens – your motorcycle tips over and scratches a neighbor’s car. Even though this did not happen on the road, MTPL insurance would still be helpful. It would cover the damage your motorcycle caused to the neighbor’s car. However, if your motorcycle also got damaged, MTPL would not cover the repair costs – that is where casco insurance comes in, and we will tell you more about it soon.

Why get casco insurance for your motorcycle?

Casco insurance for motorcycles is not mandatory, but it can be really useful. Unfortunately, many riders realize its importance only when it is too late – after an accident has already happened.

It is important to understand the difference between MTPL and casco. If you cause an accident that also damages your motorcycle and gear, MTPL insurance will not cover these costs. That is because MTPL is meant to cover damages you cause to other traffic participants and their vehicles. On the other hand, if your own motorcycle is damaged during an accident, your mind and wallet will be more at ease if you have valid casco insurance.

Casco insurance for motorcycles can “save the day” in many tricky situations. It provides important financial support if, for example:

  • Your motorcycle is damaged in a traffic accident and needs repairs.
  • Someone else scratches or damages parts of your motorcycle.
  • Your motorcycle suffers serious damage after colliding with an animal.
  • A thief steals your motorcycle while breaking into your property.
  • After a major accident, repairing your motorcycle is no longer technically possible.

It is also important to mention that If Motocasco includes 24/7 roadside assistance. This means that if you cannot continue your ride due to a traffic accident or another reason (for example, a flat tire on the road), we will provide towing services to take your motorcycle to a service center of your choice in Estonia.

Another advantage – no matter which policy you choose, your motorcycle gear will also be insured. As a rider, you know that quality gear can be a significant investment, so it is important to keep it protected. If an unfortunate fall damages your favorite helmet or special riding apparel, do not worry – we will compensate for the loss.

Situations where motorcycle casco insurance has been incredibly helpful

Life is unpredictable, and you can never be fully prepared for everything that might happen. But it is good to know that in those unexpected moments, you can rely on your financial safety net – casco insurance, which helps make tough times a little easier.

Kaspars Duburs, Senior Large Enterprises account manager at If Insurance and a motorcycle enthusiast, shares situations where motocasco has been helpful to him and our clients.

Small speed, big losses

It might seem that the "most painful" and expensive traffic accidents only happen at high speeds. However, speed is not always the main factor. Here is an example – a motorcyclist, riding through the city at 40 km/h, had a car unexpectedly pull out from a side street. Since the car driver did not check the road safety before making the maneuver, a collision occurred. Even at this moderate speed, the motorcycle's front fork broke, the suspension was damaged, and the frame bent. Fortunately, the motorcyclist had the right gear, which protected him from serious injuries.

After the crash, the motorcycle was no longer in a condition to be ridden – it was a total loss. Casco insurance covered the amount equal to the motorcycle's pre-accident market value.

Important!
No matter whether your motorcycle ride is short or long, be responsible for your own safety and wear proper gear. In case of a collision, you will be better protected from injuries.

Actions of other drivers cannot be influenced

During the busy motorbike season, one of our customers was on a ride outside of Riga. He stopped at a roadside restaurant for a break. But his lunch was interrupted when he heard his motorcycle’s alarm. A car had accidentally bumped into his bike in the parking lot, knocking it over. It was a small bump, but the damage was significant – repairing the motorcycle ended up costing around €8 000.

The road surface really matters

Our client and his friends, fellow motorcycle enthusiasts, were on a trip abroad. Their destination was Austria – a country known for its great road quality. As usual, the riders communicated with each other via radios to share important road information. The riders in front noticed that, due to some roadwork, the asphalt changed suddenly to fine gravel, so they immediately warned the others. Despite slowing down, our client’s motorcycle swerved and fell because of the change in road surface. Luckily, the fall only resulted in some bruises, but his motorcycle was not so lucky – the repair estimate came to around €10 000.

If you have decided to get on your motorcycle, remember to be responsible for both yourself and other road users:

  • Before each season starts, refresh your theoretical and practical knowledge.
  • Choose appropriate riding gear for your safety.
  • Follow the traffic rules.
  • Respect and follow the motorcycle riding culture – when riding in a group, keep a safe distance, maintain your position, use proper hand signals.
  • Be cautious when riding in changing weather conditions. If it starts raining heavily during your ride, put on your rain gear and, if possible, take cover from the rain. If that’s not an option, slow down and ride more carefully than usual, avoiding sharp or sudden maneuvers.

Casco for motorcycle or MTPL? Both!

Now you know that motorcycle MTPL insurance is mandatory for participating in road traffic, and it protects you financially against damages you may accidentally cause to other road users. On the other hand, motorcycle casco insurance offers additional financial protection that helps if something unexpected happens to your motorcycle or gear.
